St John of God Respite Service

St John of God Respite services provides planned respite opportunities on weekends and holiday periods. Since 1997 St John of God Services Victoria have been funded by the Department of Human Services to provide planned respite opportunties on weekends and holiday periods to families living in the Northern Metropolitan region of Melbourne.

The focus of this service is to offer people interesting and positive experiences whilst their carer/family have a break from their carer responsibilities. Particular attention is paid to the compatibility of people using this service so that social, leisure and recreational opportunities can be maximised.

The types of activities currently offered depend on the interests of the groups and include movies, swimming, BBQ's, bowling, bike riding, football etc.

There is an extensive waiting list for the weekend and holiday respite service.

St John of God Services Victoria have also been funded since 1997, by the Department of Human Services, to provide a meaningful day program option for people that have a disability and who live in the Northern Metropolitan Region, whilst also providing their carer/family with a 'break' from their caring responsibilities. The type of activity is dependent upon individual interests and self-determination of services is encouraged as much as possible. People are assisted to access services such as Community Houses, Leisure and Indoor Sporting venues.

A crisis response funded by the Department of Human Services is also a feature of the Respite Service
